The War Memorial outside St. Thomas' Church, Derby, is a plain Latin sandstone
cross on an octagonal tapered column.
The church and the memorial are both Listed, but are in a sorry state. One
of the name tablets around the base has been damaged and removed for safekeeping
inside the church which is no longer used for worship.
St. Thomas' Church is on Pear Tree Road, Derby, at the junction with Richmond Road.
The Imperial War Museum's Inventory
of War Memorials has listed the 186 names commemorated on the memorial.
Two of the names commemorated are of soldiers who served in the Yorkshire
Regiment.
Private Sydney Harvey, 35160. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment,
formerly 35363 9th T R Battn. Killed 27 May 1918.
Born Derby, Enlisted Derby.
Commemorated on the SOISSONS MEMORIAL.
(Richard Roberts, <richard.nsw@googlemail.com>, states that in the 1911
Census Sydney Harvey was born in 1899 and was living in Becher Street which
is cheek by jowl with St Thomas’ Church. He was the son of John and
Mary Jane Harvey.)

Formerly 27041 Sherwood Foresters. Son of Mrs. Ann Vickers, of Waterloo St.,
Derby; husband of Sarah Ann Vickers, of 13, Charlotte St., Derby. Died 13
April 1918. Aged 48.
Born Littleover (Derby), Enlisted Derby.
