The Congleton War Memorial is located in a small garden on Lawton Street.
The Congleton War Memorial was originally an ornate Celtic-Style Cross on a tapering shaft. The ide tapering plinth bears dedication. The Cross has a three-stepped base. Behind the Cross a curved wall bore six metal plaques with embossed names and inscription. A Celtic-style carving is on head and shaft of Cross.
However, in September 2021 the plaques behind the Cross were removed and were replaced by by 14 sandstone tablets standing on a low wall, seven to each side of the cross.
243 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World war, and 217 in the Second World war.
A transcription of the names is on the Imperial war Museum's
Register of
War Memorials website.
The Carl's
