Darlington West Cemetery contains 59 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 126 from the Second. The war graves plot also contains one non-war burial and there are four war graves of other nationalities in the cemetery.

There are three men of the Yorkshire Regiment who are buried in this cemetery, - one from very early on in the War (presumably as a result of a training accident). One of the three is commemorated by a family headstone, and is not shown in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records.
There is also one soldier of the Green Howards in the cemetery.

The First World War graves are scattered throughout the cemetery. Due to the overgrown nature of parts of the cemetery, and the apparently disorganised state of the cemetery, the graves are very difficult to locate.

Lance Corporal Alfred Ward Salmon. 241698. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Died at home 16 February 1919. Aged 36.
Resided Leyburn.

L/Cpl Alfred Salmon was a grocer's assistant who worked in Leyburn, but his mother and brother lived in Darlington. He was discharged form the army on 15 April 1918 as a result of wounds.

Alfred Salmon's headstone is badly hidden by trees and bushes. Having found the location of the headstone, the tree branches and undergrowth had to be cleared to enable a photograph. For the condition of the headstone as found, see below.
