The firm of Bolckow, Vaughan and Company Ltd was an English ironmaking and mining company founded in 1864, based on the partnership since 1840 of its two founders, Henry Bolckow and John Vaughan. The firm drove the dramatic growth of Middlesbrough and the production of coal and iron in the North-East of England in the 19th century. By 1907 Bolckow, Vaughan was possibly the largest producer of pig iron in the world.

A Roll of Honour of those employees of the company who lost their lives in the First World War is now housed in the Kirkleatham Museum situated in Redcar, Cleveland.

The panel in the Roll of Honour for the Middlesbrough Office, Middlesbrough Works, and South Banks Works, carries the names of at least 74 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment (out of a total of 206 names on the panel).

We are very grateful to Bolckow for his photos (posted on Flickr) of this memorial.

"Erasmus Darwin was the grandson of Charles Darwin the renowned naturalist and was born in Cambridge on 7 December 1881.

He then worked for Mather and Platts in Manchester, the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company and at the outbreak of war was company secretary for Bolckow and Vaughans Ironworks in Middlesbrough.
Erasmus Darwin spent just six days on the Western Front before being killed.
The 4th Battalion landed at Boulogne on April 18th 1915 and were immediately moved up to the Ypres Salient. At 1-00am on April 24th the battalion were by the canal to the east of Ypres and later in the morning they were ordered on to Potijze.
