The Birstall War Memorial is located in the Churchyard of St.
Peter's Church, Birstall.
The memorial is a plain shaft with a Latin cross, mounted on a 3-step octagonal
plinth. At the base of the shaft is a square block, with the dedication on
the main face, and some of the First World War commemorations on the other
three faces. The remaining First World War commemorations are found on the
faces of the octagonal plinth immediately below this block.
136 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War.
Second World War commemorations (37) are on a tablet extending out at the base of the cross.
Three soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.

Grandson of Samuel and Martha Housecroft, of Birstall, near Leeds. Killed
31 October 1918. Aged 23.
Born Birstall (Yorks), Enlisted Birstall.
Buried GIAVERA BRITISH CEMETERY, ARCADE.

Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, formerly 38085 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son
of Mark and Elizabeth Mann, of 69, Leeds Rd., Birstall, Leeds. Killed 14 August
1918. Aged 25.
Born Birstall (Yorks), Enlisted Bradford. Resided Leeds.
Buried ROISEL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
Private Ernest Stirzaker. 38187. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Killed 24 April 1917.
